The Berkeley Pit Public Education Committee has launched a website to continue its efforts to educate residents about the management of the former open pit copper mine in Butte that is now a Superfund site.
The website, http://www.pitwatch.org , includes background information on environmental issues related to the Berkeley Pit and its toxic, metal-laden water.
The Montana Standard reports the site also offers scientific information, technical and legal documents that govern Berkeley Pit management, links to other groups and agencies involved in cleanup, frequently asked questions and more. Visitors can also submit questions.
The committee's work is funded by Atlantic Richfield and Montana Resources as part of their responsibilities under the Superfund listing.
The committee has published print editions of PitWatch since 1994.
