Former Astoria Mayor Robert Chopping has died.
The Daily Astorian reports that Chopping -- the mayor from 1975 until 1982 -- died Wednesday at the age of 88.
Current Mayor Willis Van Dusen said Thursday that Chopping was a great friend, father, mayor and businessman, as well as a pillar of the Elks Lodge. He said Chopping and his wife Margaret, who survives him, were also passionate about historic restoration.
Chopping met Margaret in Santa Cruz, and they married in Lincoln City 65 years ago. He worked at radio stations in Lincoln City and Coos Bay before moving to KAST in Astoria in 1960. Chopping later purchased KOHU in Hermiston.
The newspaper reports the Chopping had the city had the city in good financial shape when he decided not to seek another term.
