Portland, OR -

The Oregon State Police say a driver died Friday after a traffic stop and chase led to gunfire in Central Oregon.

The police said the traffic stop happened shortly before noon along U.S. 20 near Sisters, and the man behind the wheel pointed a gun at a trooper and fled.

A police statement says officers deployed spike strips, and the vehicle turned off the highway and came to a stop.

Then, the police said, shots were fired, and the driver was found dead in the vehicle. The police said it was too early to confirm he died of shots from officers.

The shooting came a day after a trooper was wounded and a man killed near The Dalles.

In the Friday chase, no officers were reported injured.
