Billings, MT -

An investigation is underway after a Yellowstone County sheriff's deputy shot a man during a chase near Laurel.

Sheriff's Lt. Kent O'Donnell tells The Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/1ecnyKk ) that Laurel police approached two people who were suspected in other crimes at about noon Monday. One of them ran away but was caught soon after, and the other was shot as he stole a pickup truck from a nearby parking lot.

O'Donnell says the deputy fired at the man because he thought he was armed.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested after he crashed the pickup on Old Highway 10 West between Laurel and Park City. Laurel police were not available for comment Monday afternoon.

The extent of the suspect's injuries has not been released.
