Portland, OR -

The Douglas County sheriff's office says a California couple following directions from a GPS device has been stuck two days with their motor home and utility trailer on a muddy back road in the Southern Oregon mountains.

The couple left Interstate 5 Saturday on their way to Coos Bay and struck off across country toward a highway to the coast, Oregon 42.

They got within four miles before mud and tree branches brought them to a halt.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Zielinski says a tow truck driver wouldn't try the road on Sunday.

Monday afternoon, rescuers with four-wheel-drive vehicles were trying to winch the vehicle out.

Zielinski says one of the people is 73-year-old Charles Garton of Ridgecrest, Calif. She didn't have his wife's name. They've refused to leave the vehicle.
