Commissioners in Ravalli County are asking the state Department of Administration to assess issues with the treasurer's office and provide guidance to the treasurer, who is months behind in processing monthly reports and disbursing tax money.
The commissioners held an emergency meeting Monday, where they heard from officials with towns, schools, fire departments and irrigation districts in the county about the effects of the delays. Stevensville Superintendent Dave Whitesell said payroll is a concern.
Treasurer Valerie Stamey reassured commissioners that her office was "literally on the cusp of turning the corner" in getting issues resolved.
Stamey was appointed in September to fill the term of Marie Keeton, who resigned. Since then, the office lost three of its most experienced employees, two of whom questioned Stamey's ability to do the work.
