Cheryl Belcourt has been chosen to succeed her late husband, Gordon Belcourt, as head of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council.
The Billings Gazette reports Belcourt was named the executive director of the organization after receiving unanimous support from the 11-member group that Belcourt led from 1998 until he died in July at age 68. He is credited with building the council into a powerful voice for Native Americans as it worked to improve health, economic development and education for tribal members.
Cheryl Belcourt has served the council since 1998 in both volunteer and paid positions and helped her husband develop policies and resolutions regarding public health and gambling. She says she is proud to continue the work her husband was doing.
