Bozeman, MT -

A 22-year-old Bozeman man has denied a misdemeanor charge filed after a gun went off in his apartment and injured his upstairs neighbor.

Benjamin Michael Johnson pleaded not guilty to negligent endangerment during a hearing Monday in Bozeman Municipal Court.

Charging documents say Johnson was startled awake early on Nov. 23 by a loud noise and smoke alarms in his apartment. After checking the living room, Johnson returned to his room and noticed his .44-caliber revolver on the floor. One round had been fired and there was a hole in his ceiling.

Johnson went to the upstairs apartment and found the 25-year-old victim, who had been shot in the leg. The man was treated at a Billings hospital.

Johnson told investigators he had no recollection of pulling the trigger.
