BOISE, Idaho -

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a permit for a jet boat race in northern Idaho after intervention from officials including Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter.

Otter announced on Tuesday afternoon that wildlife concerns on the St. Joe River near St. Maries had been addressed and the Coast Guard agreed to allow the event, called "Race the Joe," from May 17-19.

In early May, the Coast Guard said it couldn't issue permits until the event's impacts on bald eagle and bull trout populations had been assessed.

Now, however, it says sponsors will mitigate for environmental impacts.

Last week, Otter, along with Rep. Raul Labrador and Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, asked for reconsideration.

Then, Otter included a memo to the Coast Guard, describing how potential wildlife impacts could be eased.
