Bend, OR -

The Bend City Council has voted to explore preserving a city landmark, the dammed-up part of the Deschutes River known as Mirror Pond.

PacifiCorp owns the dam but wants out of it. The power company says the dam leaks, and the power generation isn't cost-effective. The body of water is also filling with silt.

Some in the city say it would be better to take down the dam and allow the river to run free. Others want to keep Mirror Pond for recreation or as a municipal icon.

Many city leaders say there are too many unknowns to make an immediate decision, including how to pay for whatever is done. The council voted Wednesday night to pursue preservation. The city's parks board has passed a similar resolution.
