A man with multiple previous DUI convictions has pleaded no contest to charges that he crashed into two young Portland newlyweds, injuring them so badly they have undergone multiple surgeries.
The Oregonian reports that Michael Dan Allen apologized to the victims Thursday as he pleaded no contest to DUI, reckless endangerment and two counts of third-degree assault. The newspaper says he will be sentenced next week to two years in prison and his driver's license will be revoked for life.
The Oregonian says Allen is a three-time convicted DUI driver who drove while impaired a fourth time last Aug. 30.
Merita and Bashkim Abazi were walking in a crosswalk. Merita suffered a broken skull. Her husband couldn't talk for weeks and ate through a feeding tube implanted in his stomach. She says their expenses have climbed to more than $200,000.
