AUBURN, Wash. -

A 23-year-old man was stabbed to death early Tuesday while trying to break up a fight in Auburn, according to police.

Auburn Police Cmdr. Mike Hirman said the man saw another man and a woman fighting across the street just after midnight and he went to help.

"He believed that the woman was being assaulted," Hirman said.

Hirman told KOMO Radio that the woman's cousin came up and stabbed the man once or twice in the chest. The victim staggered into the street where he died.

The suspect drove off with several other people, but was arrested about eight blocks away. Police recovered a knife that they believe was used in the stabbing.
