BLAINE, Wash. -

A female Canadian border agent was shot in the neck by a gunman at the Peace Arch border crossing Tuesday afternoon, Canadian authorities said.

Bert Paquet with Surrey RCMP said a lone man pulled up to the border agent just before 2 p.m. and opened fire. The man then turned the gun on himself, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer was breathing when she was airlifted to the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, B.C. but her condition was not known. Her name has not been released.

Investigators are working to piece together the events that led up to the shooting.

It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was an American or a Canadian; however, Paquet said the man had driven up to the border crossing in a white van bearing a Washignton state license plate.

The shooting occured on the Canadian side of the border where British Columbia's Highway 99 meets Washington's Interstate 5. The crossing was closed for investigation, and drivers were advised to use the crossing along Washington's State Route 543 instead.
