The competition is heating up as the semifinals for USA Boxing's national championships start Friday.

One of the boxers working to advance to the semifinals is Melissa Parker, who has a lot at stake in her fight Thursday night.

"I don't really think about it because I am just enjoying the amateurs and focusing on 20-16," she said.

Like all the other boxers in the championships, this is about taking things to the next level.

"It's what shapes the team for the year. When you make the national team you get the international exposure and that helps us because we're going towards the Olympics," she said.

While it’s a big event for the boxers, its also a big deal for the host venue, Northern Quest Resort and Casino.

"At Northern Quest we're booked out solid," Julie Holland said. "We have 250 rooms and suites and you know we are excited to have all of those full for more than a week."

The event will be returning to Spokane for the next three years, which is good news both for Northern Quest but the rest of the community as well.

"This is really about bringing people to Spokane and showing off what a wonderful place we have to live," Holland said.
