Portland, OR -

Authorities say two backcountry skiers have been hospitalized after they were rescued from an Eastern Oregon mountain where two of their companions died in an avalanche.

It took rescuers all day Wednesday to get the man and woman off the mountain amid heavy snow and poor visibility. They suffered broken legs. Snow machines brought them out of the backcountry to Richland, south of the Wallowa Mountains.

Baker County Undersheriff Warren Thompson said Thursday the two were conscious before they were flown to St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash. He had no further information about their condition. Calls to hospital representatives weren't returned immediately.

Thompson said it's unknown when it'll be safe enough to retrieve the bodies of those killed Tuesday.

Four other members of the party were uninjured.
