Eugene, OR -

Police in Eugene, Ore., say 12 advocates for the homeless have been cited for second-degree criminal trespass after refusing to end their sit-in at the city manager's office when it closed late Tuesday afternoon.

The Register-Guard reports the 12 were briefly detained, then released.

The protesters were seeking a meeting with City Manager Jon Ruiz about the upcoming closure of the Whoville homeless camp, asking that the closure be delayed until the City Council returns from its month-long break next week.

Michael Carrigan is an activist with Community Alliance of Lane County. He calls the protest ending "just a classic symbolic civil disobedience arrest."
