BELLINGHAM, Wash. -

A mother, her three children and one of their friends were in a home that caught fire early Wednesday in Bellingham.

Firefighters found the friend dead in an upstairs bedroom. One of the children suffered burns from the heat and another was injured jumping out a second-story window.

City Fire Marshal Jason Napier says the mother and another child escaped uninjured.

Napier says the fire started in an upstairs bedroom where a teen-age boy was awakened by his burns. He alerted the house, ran downstairs and got his mother who called 911.

His brother and his friend were in another upstairs bedroom. The brother went out the window, but his friend did not make it out and could not be reached through a hall because of heat and smoke.
