COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Marcus Rael pleaded not guilty to 12 charges of assault to commit murder and a single charge of attempting to elude police in court Thursday.

Rael led officers from multiple law enforcement agencies on a 13 mile pursuit along westbound Interstate 90 that ended with an exchange of gunfire between Rael and officers back in June.

The incident started with officers in Coeur d'Alene were trying to conduct a traffic stop with Rael because they suspected he was driving drunk. He fled from the traffic stop, heading westbound on the freeway, until he stopped in Post Falls and, after a period where officers trying to talk Rael into surrendering, there was an exchange of gunfire between Rael and 12 officers.

The Bonner County Sheriff's Office says Rael intended to commit murder by brandishing firearms and firing multiple gunshots at officers. Bonner County is the lead investigating agency in the shooting due to the fact that all local agencies – Post Falls Police, Coeur d'Alene Police, Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho State Police – had officers who were involved in the incident.

Rael is currently being held on a $3 Million bond.
