COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

A North Idaho man has been convicted of second degree murder for the Christmas Day 2011 killing of a St. Maries teen.

Joseph Herrera was found guilty Thursday for the killing of 18-year-old Stefanie Womack, who was shot in the head. Herrera had claimed he was unloading the gun when it went off.

Benewah County Prosecutor Doug Payne said, however, that the evidence showed that the gun discharged at close range to Comack's head. Family and friends said not long after her killing that Herrera had been abusive and had threatened to kill her about a week before Comack died.

At the time of her killing, Comack, a 2011 graduate of the Kootenai Bridge Academy, had been working as a certified nurse assistant at Valley Vista Care Center in St. Maries.
