There's been an outpouring of support for a cheerleader from Bonners Ferry High School who was critically injured in a head-on collision over the weekend.
Kelsey Shutes loves to cheer for Bonners Ferry; it's what she lives for. But now, after her accident, the roles have been reversed and she has the whole community cheering for her.
On Saturday night Kelsey Shutes was heading home from a cheer competition when she was involved in a head-on collision with a truck. She suffered head trauma as a result of the crash and is now in the intensive care unit at Kootenai Medical Center.
She's making progress but still has a long ways to go and, thankfully is not fighting to recover alone.
The community is rallying around Kelsey with more than just well wishes. A Go Fund Me account was set up for her Monday morning and in 24 hours raised $5,000.
As of Thursday afternoon, over $8,000 has been raised to help the family with medical bills, donations even coming from complete strangers.
"We weren't expecting any of this, all we asked for is prayers, we never expected it to turn this big," Lexi Wages, Kelsey's sister, said.
The road to recovery might be long but this cheerleader has a big team, rallying around her and they won't stop until she's back on the sidelines again.
"She'll push through, she's a fighter," Wages said.
