COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

A Coeur d'Alene police officer investigating a call of a suspicious van ended up shooting and killing a pit bull that lunged at him from out of the driver's side window.

Police officers were dispatched to a suspicious van in a parking lot behind 821 Sherman Avenue after they received reports that the caller thought the driver was possibly watching young children.

As the police officer approached the driver's side of the van to investigate, a pit bull lunged out of the driver's side window toward the officer's face. The officer pulled his weapon out and fired a single shot at the dog as it lunged at him, striking it in the chest and killing it.

The officer was uninjured and no one was found inside the van.

Police are now working to locate the owner of the van and dog.
