COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

The Coeur d'Alene School District has canceled all classes for Friday amid threats of school violence.

District officials say they have heard rumored threats this week, and although they haven't found a credible threat, they're not taking any chances.

The Post Falls School District posted a note on their website about this rumor. The same thing is being heard in Coeur d'Alene as well.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said this rumor started circulating in the last 48 hours or so. Deputies have met with school officials to go over their crisis plan and security.

Investigators in Kootenai County said no specific school has been mentioned and it's very difficult to track down where this rumor started. Nothing credible has been found, officials said, but it doesn't mean they're not going to be prepared.

"I have kids that go to the schools as well. It makes me nervous makes my wife nervous. You just have to remain a little more vigilant than ever and hope that people are doing that right thing," Lieutenant Stu Miller with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said.

At the same time law enforcement agencies across the county have been looking into the rumor. This rumor has also circulated in Grant County in Washington as well as in Connell between Ritzville and Pasco.

The rumor is playing on an already heightened sense of fear from last week's shooting in Connecticut and is supposed to happen on the day the Mayans predicted the world would end.

Since last week, the sheriff's department says there has been more law enforcement in and around the schools and that will continue on Friday.

They are asking students who have heard about this rumor to tell a teacher or parent and say who you heard it from.

Within an hour of the Coeur d'Alene School District announcement it was going to be closed Friday, both Post Falls and Lakeland school districts also announced they would be closed as well.
