Man pleads guilty to crash that killed girlfriend
A 21-year-old Genesee man has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for a car crash near Juliaetta that killed his girlfriend.
The Lewiston Tribune reports Derik C. Neely was sentenced Friday to 365 days in jail but the court will suspend 325 days if he meets the terms of his two-year probationary sentence.
Magistrate Jay P. Gaskill also ordered Neely to pay nearly $17,000 in restitution and suspended his driving privileges for three years.
Court records say Neely was traveling 76 mph in a 55 mph zone on Sept. 25, 2011 when his car went off an embankment, killing 20-year-old Devin A. Matchey of Lewiston.
Neely told investigators that he and Matchey were arguing and she pulled his leg from the gas pedal, causing it to hit the steering wheel.
