Gun Appreciation Day rallies planned for Spokane, Coeur d'Alene
With stricter gun control on the horizon, gun owners across the country are fired up and preparing to celebrate Gun Appreciation Day Saturday, a time set aside for people to stand up for their Second Amendment rights.
Gun Appreciation Day will be celebrated on both sides of the state line Saturday.
In Coeur d'Alene, a rally that will include speeches from state lawmakers, will be held at Black Sheep Sporting Goods at 1 p.m. As part of the rally, gun advocates are encouraging participants to openly carry weapons as allowed by Idaho law.
There is no doubt the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting has affected the entire nation. How we put a stop to senseless violence remains up for intense debate. Across the country gun owners and elected officials are debating gun control.
Several sheriffs in Oregon have said they won't enforce any new federal gun control laws, while in Mississippi the governor, is urging that state's legislature to prohibit the enforcement of any new federal gun laws the president gets passed.
Obama wants universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. Gun owners, however, aren't seeing eye-to-eye with the president. In the last month, Sharp Shooting is one of many gun stores across our area that has seen a spike in business.
"There's been a huge rush on product. The customers are having a hard time understanding where all the supply went. There's a lot of false information out there that factories are hoarding it. That is not true," Sharp Shooting owner Robin Ball said.
On Saturday, Ball will be one of one thousands of people across the country taking part in national Gun Appreciation Day. She plans to use the day as an opportunity to teach others about responsible gun ownership.
"We'll go over some of the legalities of safe storage in the state of Washington and some of the information as far as concealed-carry permits, how to get one, what it allows you to do and what it doesn't allow you to do," Ball explained.
