FROM OUR NORTH IDAHO NEWSROOM...IT'S AN EXCITING DAY
FOR THE COEUR D'ALENE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
A NEW TOP COP IS SWORN IN.
AND A POLICE SUBSTATION OPENS DOWNTOWN.
KXLY 4'S CAITI CURREY IS WORKING FOR YOU...SHE JOINS
US LIVE IN THE STUDIO TONIGHT, WITH A LOOK AT THE
BIG CHANGES FOR THE DEPARTMENT AND THE LAKE CITY.
NADINE- THEY WERE BOTH A LONG TIME IN THE MAKING!
EVER SINCE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT MOVED TO THEIR CURRENT
LOCATION IN 1999.
THEY'VE FELT A DISCONNECT TO THE SOUTH EASTERN SIDE
OF THE CITY.
AND THE HOPE IS THIS NEW SUBSTATION WILL FIX THAT...
AND THEN OF COURSE.
THE NEW CHIEF TOOK HIS OATH TODAY.
AFTER BEING SELECTED FROM OVER 70 CANDIDATES FROM
ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE IN AUGUST THAT LEE
WHITE WOULD BECOME THE NEWEST COEUR D'ALENE POLICE
HE HAS MADE HIS FIRST PRIORITY CLEAR.
We want to once again have a police department that
the community is proud of,
CHIEF WHITE HOPES TO
ACOMPLISH THAT BY BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
AND THERE'S NO BETTER WAY TO START STRENGTHENING THOSE
TIES THAN BY OPENING A NEW SUBSTATION IN THE SOUTHEAST
REGION OF THE CITY.
some of the area and it's residents felt like they
didn't have the officer presence that they had in
the past and I'm excited to really develop the connection
that we had with the community down in that part of
SINCE THE OPENING OF MCUEN FIELD...MORE SPECIFICALLY
THE PARKING GARAGE.
THE CITY HAS SEEN AN INCREASE IN POLICE CALLS.
FROM IT'S OPENING IN MARCH TO THE END OF AUGUST.
THE CITY REPORTED A TOTAL OF 100 POLICE CALLS REGARDING
BREAK-INS, GRAFFITI AND DRAG RACING.
WHERE THE CITY IS ALREADY WORKING ON WAYS TO ADDRESS
THE NEW SUBSTATION IS ANOTHER BENEFIT.
You know visability always makes a difference.
It's going to shorten our responce times and it will
have an impact on crime prevention.
THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE ENTIRE
COMMUNITY OF COEUR D'ALENE...
This is a fantastic department with an outstanding
and supportive community, and i am honored to be part
of such a fantastic organization.
THE SUB STATION IS ONLY ABOUT ONE-THOUSAND SQUARE
BUT THE DEPARTMENT SAYS THAT'S ALL THEY NEED!
OFFICERS WILL USE THE SUBSTATION AS A PLACE TO TAKE
REPORTS AND HANDLE WALK-INS.
THEIR LONG TERM GOAL IS TO ASSIST IN COMMUNITY OUTREACH
PROGRAMS LIKE BLOCK WATCH GROUPS.
