THE SANDPOINT CITY COUNCIL HEARD FROM FIRED UP RESIDENTS
TONIGHT... WHO WANT TO KEEP A TEN COMMANDMENTS MONUMENT
IN THEIR PARK.
AN OUT OF STATE GROUP WANTS IT REMOVED.
KXLY4'S ALLIE NORTON WAS AT THAT MEETING... AND HAS
"A couple dozen people offered their opinion tonight
the vast majority were in favor of keeping the monument
at Farmin Park. No decision was made but the council
was offered free legal advice if the case were to
ALMOST EVERY CHAIR IN SANDPOINT'S COUNCIL CHAMBER
WAS FILLED TONIGHT FOR THE
DISCUSSION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENT
MONUMENT IN FARMIN PARK.
"I just wanted to come out today and be able to say
that the monument is a historical document and it
represents a foundation for many people's beliefs
THE FOUR-DECADE-OLD GIFT FROM THE FRATERNAL ORDER
OF EAGLES IS STIRRING CONTREVERSY DUE TO ITS PLACEMENT
ON PUBLIC PROPERTY. IN NOVEMBER, THE CITY RECEIVED
A LETTER FROM THE FREEDOM FROM RELIGION FOUNDATION,
A NON-PROFIT THAT ADVOCATES FOR SEPERATION BETWEEN
CHURCH AND STATE, BASED OUT OF WISCONSIN. THEIR MESSAGE:
MOVE THE MONUMENT OUT OF
THE PARK OR FACE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES.
NOW, THE CITY IS LOOKING AT WHAT THE MAJORITY WANTS...
AND SO FAR IT LOOKS LIKE THEY WANT IT TO STAY.
"The community wants to see that kind of thing, it
reminds right and wrong. Things that are good. feel
it's more beneficial for us as a people just to have
it where we can see it going by the public park there."
ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO OPPOSED THE MONUMENT'S LOCATION
WAS AIDEN MILLHEIM.
"I tried to represent our position as best I could,
specifically that it's not about offense and it's
not about freedom of religion, that we're specifically
taking exception to the fact that it's on public land
and that's a issue of separation."
THE COUNCIL WAS BRIEFED BY THE CITY ATTORNEY OF SIMILIAR
CASES BEFORE THE ITEM WAS PLACED ON AGENDA FOR A DECISION
TO MOVE IT OR LEAVE IT AND FACE LITIGATION. LIBERTY
INSTITUTE, A LEGAL ORGANIZATION OUT OF TEXAS WAS CONFIDENT
THE CITY'S CASE WOULD STAND IN COURT AND OFFERED THEIR
LEGAL SERVICES FOR FREE.
"Again no decision tonight, now Liberty Institute
will discuss with the council the details of the case
and what comes next. Reporting in Sandpoint, Allie
Norton KXLY 4 news.
IT ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THE FREEDOM FROM RELIGION
FOUNDATION HAS FOUGHT AGAINST THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
ON PUBLIC LAND.
IN 2011... THEY SUCCESSFULLY SUED TO HAVE THEM REMOVED
FROM A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN VIRGINIA... AND IN 2004, WON
A SUIT TO REMOVE A STATUE FROM A WISCONSIN PARK.
CLOSER TO HOME....
THEY'RE FIGHTING TO HAVE THIS STATUE OF JESUS REMOVED
FROM A SKI RUN ON MONTANA'S BIG MOUNTAIN.
IT WAS ERECTED DECADES AGO AS A MEMORIAL TO WORLD
WAR TWO VETERANS.
