Teen reported missing after prom dies in car wreck

LENORE, Idaho - Sad news in the story of an Orofino teen reported missing after prom:17-year-old Kristian Perez died in a car crash Wednesday afternoon.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff's office responded to a report of a possibly suicidal male driving near Lenore, Idaho this afternoon.

The driver lost control of his car and rolled over an embankment on Sunnyside Bench Road near the Clearwater County line. He was extricated from the car and brought to a hospital by Life Flight.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was confirmed to be Perez, who later succumbed to his injuries at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office confirmed they had received a call from the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office of a report of Perez taking his parents vehicle, a white 1999 Chevy Tahoe, without their permission.

Investigation showed the Tahoe to be driving west bound on Sunnyside Bench Road at a high rate of speed with Perez' family following the Tahoe.

Perez soon lost control of the Tahoe on the roadway, struck an embankment on the north side of the ride, rolled several time, went of the embankment on the south side of the road, and came to rest on its tires near the intersection with Pecan Lane.

Perez was reported missing on Sunday morning, after he did not return from prom. He rode with a relative to the dance, and his shoe, broken cell phone and tuxedo jacket were found near that car.

He was found safe Tuesday morning, and charged as a runaway.
