Spokane Police are investigating after a man was stabbed to death late Saturday afternoon inside the STA Bus Plaza.
Police arrived on scene at 3:20 p.m. Saturday and immediately began CPR on the victim. The man was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
Using security video footage, police were able to identify Donald T. Phillips, 40, as a possible suspect. Just before 5:30 p.m. a homeowner in the Peaceful Valley neighborhood called saying he had seen a man matching the suspects description. When officer arrived, a second homeowner stated that the suspect had entered his home and attempted to hold him at knife point.
A search of the area included SWAT, Spokane Fire, and ambulance, K9s and Air 1. The majority of Peaceful Valley was closed down, and residents were asked to stay out of the area or remain in their homes. The search lasted several hours.
Just after 9:00 p.m. Phillips walked out of a yard on the north side of Main, just west of Cedar in new clothes. Officers took him into custody without incident. When SWAT officers searched the area Phillips had come from they found a house fire in the 1400 block of West Water. The fire is still being investigated, but it is believed that Phillips was involved in its ignition.
Phillips was booked into jail for both homicide at the STA Bus Plaza as well on a felony Department of Corrections warrant.
The Spokane Police Department the cooperation of the Peaceful Valley neighborhood was a key factor in the successful capture of Phillips.
