Santa Express open for your kids' Christmas shopping needs

SPOKANE, Wash. - Santa Express vo

If you have small children you know it can be difficult steering them in the right direction when it comes to buying gifts for others. However there's a great resource in town that helps parents teach the importance of giving and the value of a dollar.

That resource is Santa Express, the gift shop just for kids, that benefits the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

On one side of the store is Vanessa's Village, where parents can shop and wait for their kids. On the other side of the store, behind a red curtain, is where the children do their shopping and believe it or not adults aren't allowed back there, and there is a very good reason for that.

"The idea is just to give those kids a sense of accomplishment a sense of pride, and being a part of that giving tradition," Amy Knapton said.

The way it works is simple. You bring your kids, check them at the curtain and an Elf takes them back to shop.

"They pick out items for parents, teachers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, anybody in the family, loved ones, and then they get a chance to wrap those gifts," Knapton said.

Parents can give kids a budget to work with, which teaches them another lesson. Presents range from 50 cents to $8 and there's a little something for everyone. The best part of all this is the proceeds go back to the crisis nursery.

"This is really important to the nursery; we are 100-percent community funded so it is through events and individuals that contribute to the nursery that keep our doors open, so about $80,000 is raised from this event, so its truly amazing, but it is just what we need to keep our doors open, take care of kids and really just keep kids safe in our community," Knapton said.

You and your kids can check out Santa Express every day through December 23.
