PCB levels down in Spokane River

SPOKANE, Wash. - Efforts to rid the Spokane River of cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) appears to be working.

According to a report by the Washington Department of Ecology the Spokane River Regional Toxics Task force has prevented 283 pounds of PCBs from entering into the river.

Since a study was done in 2007 to figure out how to meet strict water quality standards the task force has removed 265 pounds of PCBs from soil, waste water, and storm water and eliminated the potential for another 18 pounds from reaching the river.

PCBs build up over time in the in fish, animals and humans.

Spokane Riverkeeper Jerry White Jr. says the progress is good, but there is still a ways to go in meeting the high standard.

"In the coming years we're going to have roll up our sleeves and work very very hard towards total elimination of PCBs," White Jr. said.

In the coming years several projects are in the works to eliminate PCB's. The city of Spokane is currently working on installing several massive combined sewer tanks.

The near 1-million gallon tanks store sewer and storm water runoff when it rains and keeps the city treatment plants from becoming overwhelmed to the point the sewer water is just dumped into the river.

Several events are also planned in Spokane to raise awareness and money to clean up the river. River
