Spokane County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly shooting that happened in broad daylight near the intersection of Atlantic and Wedgewood in North Spokane.
Just before 1 p.m. witnesses say they heard shots fired near an apartment complex at Rhodes and Atlantic, just one block west of Division Street.
"We heard five or six pops and then we heard a car starting to come down this way and then we saw a car go by as fast as he could, possibly 50 miles an hour. Quickly with one person in the car," witness Pepper Dixon said.
That car was described as a blue Chrysler New Yorker.
After the gunshots witnesses say the driver threw the car in reverse, turned around and sped south on Atlantic.
"I heard four gunshots, like they were really close," John Hamilton said.
Hamilton ran outside to see the victim down in the middle of the street.
"I ran down there, because he was laying on the ground to see if he was OK and they were rendering first aid to him, you know it must have been his friends or neighbors or something and they said you need to stay back and I said 'Do you need any help?' and they said no," Hamilton said.
Arriving police and sheriff's deputies found a large caliber handgun casing in the street where the victim, identified by family members as Fabian, had fallen. Witnesses told deputies the suspect used a large black handgun, which has not been located.
"This does not appear to be a random event. But we are still trying to piece together what happened," Deputy Mark Gregory with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office said.
In fact detectives knew the name of the suspected gunman -- 19-year-old Isaiah Schauman -- less than a half hour after the shots were fired. Investigators from both the drug and gang units were called to the scene.
"As soon as detectives or patrol receive information they are following up on those leads immediately, so we do talk to witnesses to get as much information as we can and then it fans out from there," Gregory said.
Schauman was last seen driving a light colored 1986 Chrysler New Yorker with WA license plate number AEE5144. He's considered armed and dangerous so if you see him please call 911.
