SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one person dead at the Howard Johnson Inn on North Division early Sunday morning.
"It was just total chaos," Robert Carter said about all the police activity across from his house. "I mean they were just all over the place."
Carter said his wife told him what was happening and so they both went and watched the events unfold. He recalls seeing about 20 police cars surrounding the motel from 12:30a.m. until after 3p.m.
"There was several police officers doing the investigation south of the Howard Johnson's," Carter said.
That's where he thinks the body of the victim was located. Spokane Police said in a press release that when they arrived on scene, the man who was shot was already deceased in the parking lot. Whoever the suspect is, fled the scene. Officers secured the area as well as two vehicles that may have been involved
"One was an SUV and one was a pick up," Carter said.
Major crimes detectives are now investigating. In that investigation SPD is trying to find out if another crime was being committed before the shooting occurred, how many people were involved and who the shooter is.
They are also investigating whether the shooter and victim knew each other.
The victim's identity will be released later this week by the medical examiners office. If anyone has information on the incident, you are asked to call crime check at 456-2233.
