SPOKANE, Wash. - One man is in custody after an attempted home invasion by a machete-wielding man became a nearly seven hour standoff with the Spokane Police SWAT Team at a Hillyard skate shop Wednesday morning.
Spokane Police responded to calls just after 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning about a man with a machete trying to break into a home on the 3000 block of East Diamond.
According to Spokane Police Lieutenant Dean Sprague, the man forced his way into an apartment while the victim of the invasion was on the phone with dispatchers.
"He actually forced his way in, and there was some kind of a scuffle. We got here on scene and a man brandishing a machete advanced on officers (and) attempted to charge us two or three times. We backed off," Sprague said.Machete standoff vo
The victim of the home invasion suffered minor injuries.
Officers said the man then retreated to Hillyard Skateboards, where he barricaded himself inside. Police think the man may be the owner of that business.
SWAT broke down the door of the skate shop just after 7 a.m. and then fired tear gas into the business after 8 a.m. in an attempt to force the man to surrender. A short time later more tear gas was fired inside.
Around 10 a.m. police entered the building and this time the man had a large wooden staff and attempted to stab SWAT team members.
"We gave this subject repeated chances today and even at the end when he knew he was going to be taken into custody, there were no front doors, no back doors, he still tried to stab one of the officers even though he knew there was no possibility of escape. So I think it just goes to a person's mindset that he was intent on hurting somebody," Spokane Police Commander Brad Arleth said.
Eventually the man, identified by police later as Glen Fisher was pulled out of the building by police, arrested on charges of 1st degree burglary and 3rd degree assault, and was put into the back of an ambulance. He was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated by mental health professionals.
