Local same-sex couples prepare to marry this week

SPOKANE, Wash. - The new state law allowing same-sex couples to marry takes effect this week. Voters approved Referendum-74 by a seven percent margin last month.

Long lines are expected at the Spokane County Auditor's office Thursday. They've invited couples to wait in the lobby starting at 7 a.m. while the office opens at 8:30.

Shilo Reed and Dani Lord-Flynn have been trying to show and prove their love for each other for almost two and a half years.

"In 18 days it'll be 2 1/2 years...not that we're counting."

Shilo likes to share how she proposed.

"A scavenger hunt, and I had (Dani) go to the place where we first met, the place where we first kissed, and everything and then I was waiting at the end with the ring and, Dani just started crying."

Thanks to the new law on Thursday, the two woman say they'll be like "everyone else" by being able to getting married.

"We get to say 'we're married,' I can say, 'this is my wife,' that's what that means," Lord-Flynn said.

The couple is taking that morning off from their jobs to be at the courthouse by 7 a.m. Thursday. The county auditor expects a crowd to join them. The office received calls last week from same-sex couples planning to fly in from Texas.

"This is a very important event in people's lives and we understand that and we are very honored to be part of that process for every couple that qualifies under the law," Auditor Vicky Dalton said.

Dani and Shilo plan to pick up the papers, then have a traditional wedding on the 21st.

"That was the date we picked a year and a half ago...we started dating officially on summer solstice so we thought it'd be fun to get married on winter solstice."

Now, they say, they'll validate that love with a piece of paper, finally.

"It's time to make history," Dani said to Shilo.

The sheriff's department doesn't expect any trouble, but with the added people and emotional nature of the day they'll have extra security in the building.
