Friends of WWII veteran beaten to death grieving his passing

SPOKANE, Wash. - 21616974

Friends of the Spokane WWII veteran beaten to death in a parking lot hope the attackers are caught and justice is served.

On Wednesday night, 88-year-old WWII veteran Delbert "Shorty" Belton was sitting in his car when he was attacked by two men in their teens or early 20's.

Betty, who asked we not use her last name, was friends with Belton for decades and had breakfast with him the day he was attacked.

"He didn't deserve this," said Betty.

"It's so senseless and unnecessary," she added.

Betty said Belton was a kind man who loved to dance.

"He was just a nice person for God's sake. I don't think Shorty had a mean bone in his body," said Betty.

Betty can't understand why anyone would attack her friend.  She hopes the suspects will be caught sooner than later.

"What is this world coming to anyway? They are raising a bunch of idiots.  I mean how would they like someone to do that to them?  When they get 88 years old ? But I don't know if they will live to be 88, surely they will go to jail," she said.
