Three dead in North Idaho crashes

Multiple vehicle collisions reported in Eastern Washington

SPOKANE, Wash. - Cataldo crash vo

Three people have been killed Tuesday in two separate crashes in North Idaho, while there have been multiple crashes and collisions reported across Eastern Washington.

Two people were killed in a two car crash on Interstate-90 near Cataldo. A man and woman were driving in a Nissan Pathfinder westbound around 10:30 a.m. when they lost control, went across the median and slammed into a semi-truck. The truck ended up in the eastbound lanes, while the Pathfinder came to a rest in the median.

The woman in the passenger seat died on impact while the male driver was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The victims have not been identified. The two people in the semi-truck were not injured.

The crash slowed traffic in the westbound lanes while eastbound traffic was diverted off the freeway for about five hours. Idaho State Police say slick roads were a major factor in the crash.

In Nez Perce County, one person was killed in a two-vehicle crash along Highway 12 at 8:11 a.m. In that collision the driver of a tractor trailer crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a pick-up truck.

The driver of that pick-up, Gregory Challinor, 50, of Orofino, was killed in the crash. Two other passengers in his truck were taken to Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

Highway 12 was intermittently blocked for six hours after the crash.

In Spokane, a three-car collision just after 3 p.m. blocked the two left lanes of I-90 west of the Division Street exit.

In Grant County, Highway 17 south of Moses Lake was shut down until 5 p.m. Tuesday in the wake of a tanker truck crash. The truck crashed into a bridge over Lind Coulee. No one was hurt in the crash and traffic was detoured around the closed stretch of highway in the vicinity of the bridge.
