Saturday afternoon and evening, investigators locked down four separate crime scenes all involved in the shooting.
A witness to the shootings, who only wants to be identified by her first name, said she smelled gun powder right away after hearing several shots fired.
"First I heard gunshots, and my husband come running in the house and said 'honey, that was a high-powered gun, maybe a 45 or something that's not a 22'," Evelyn said.
She was told the shooter was aiming at an apartment complex and shot a man in the chest.
Another witness said he was walking his dog when the man began shooting in his direction. He estimates the bullets came within just a few feet of him.
Major Ben Wolfinger with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said having a man randomly shooting through town is one of their worst nightmares.
"At least on one occasion he fired at the officers as they were pursuing him," Wolfinger said.
He says the gunman lost control of his vehicle near Higgins Point and then opened fire on officers again, hitting one of the patrol cars. Officers returned fire and killed the suspect.
The identity of the shooter has not been released. More information is expected to be released Monday.
