St. Maries woman recovering from murder-suicide attempt

Husband stabbed wife, then shot himself

ST. MARIES, Idaho - A St. Maries man is dead and his wife is recovering at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a murder-suicide attempt late Saturday night.

An Idaho State Police officer driving along Highway 3 found a car reportedly with its hazard lights flashing along the side of the road early Sunday morning and stopped to investigate. The officer found a woman inside barely conscious with a three-inch slash to her neck.

That woman, later identified as Mary McGreal, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, losing consciousness due to blood loss. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of her injuries.

Meanwhile, Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser and two of his deputies went looking for her husband, Kurt McGreal and drove to the couple's home less than a mile down the road from where they found his wife in the car.

When they arrived at their home officers went inside, found the interior smoky and located McGreal. He had a cut on one wrist and, according to Sheriff Resser, he shot himself in the right temple with a Smith and Wesson .22 pistol.

"He got a gas can full of gas, went in through the back door, went into the kitchen area, emptied the gas can in the kitchen, walked through idly, he lit it and took the weapon and shot himself," Resser said.

McGreal was pronounced dead at the hospital.

All of Mary McGreal's family is in Seattle with her; they said she was stabbed multiple times and suffered a punctured lung, and was hit in the spine, suffering partial paralysis as a result of that stab wound. She apparently was also beaten before she was stabbed and suffered several broken ribs, family members said.

While she is in serious but stable condition at Harborview, a family member said Monday afternoon that Mary is awake and alert and already called her bosses at Potlatch Corporation to let them know what happened and that she wouldn't be in to work, and called other family members to tell them she's doing okay.

Neighbors of the McGreals said Monday the couple had been seen earlier in the evening arguing at a benefit at the Elks Lodge in St. Maries. Authorities are investigating  the couple's home where Kurt McGreal was found while search crews are combing the side of the road along Highway 3 between the McGreal residence and where their car was found, searching for the knife that had been used to stab Mary McGreal.
