Hayden boy shot in head, in critical condition

HAYDEN, Idaho - The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office says a seven year old Hayden boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head on Saturday.

"I'm kind of in shock," neighbor Herbert Powell said.

Residents in the Midtown Mobile Home Park off Government Way in Hayden said that the boy was with another child and playing with a small caliber handgun. It's unsure which child was holding the gun when it discharged, but it sent the bullet into the seven year old's head.

"I'm feeling it for them and he's not even my child," neighbor Shoshana Kuhfeldt said. "I was devastated all day yesterday."

The sheriff's office said the children were unsupervised when the incident occurred.

"It was just an accident," Sarah Lee, a friend of the family said. "The parents were sleeping and two curious young boys saw the gun and decided to play with it. Unfortunately one little boy got hurt and is now in the hospital."

Lee said the parents were in the process of moving and it's likely that the gun was being packed away.

"They're very, very protective of the kids and I know that they wouldn't just leave it out," Lee said.

The injured seven year old boy was transported to Kootenai Health for medical care. He was later transferred to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

"He's fighting," Lee said. "He's stable but still in critical condition, so we need all the prayers we can get right now."

Sheriff's Detectives are continuing their investigation.
