CHENEY, Wash. - An Eastern Washington University student was beaten with a baseball bat and left for dead at a Cheney apartment complex.
According to the affidavit of facts, Robert "Drew" Schreiber, 20, was assaulted by three people on the basketball court in the Grove Apartments complex just after midnight on Saturday, Oct. 8.
A witness said Schreiber jumped on the back of a Nissan Altima and broke out the rear window with his knee. Schreiber then allegedly ran from the scene. Three suspects exited the Nissan and chased Schreiber. The witness said the three punched and kicked Schreiber while he was on the ground.
A short time after the initial beating, the three assailants left Schreiber and collected a metal baseball bat from the Nissan. They returned to the scene to find that Schreiber was no longer there. The three started yelling about smashing windows if they couldn't find Schreiber. The trio found Drew as he was looking for someone to help him.
After a short chase on foot, the three suspects caught Schreiber again. The victim was hit in the head 4-5 times with the baseball bat. Another suspect kicked Schreiber multiple times in the torso.
Two of the three suspects were identified as John Mellgren, 24, and Damian Dunigan, 20. They were both transported to the Spokane County Jail and booked on 1st degree attempted murder charges.
Schreiber is in the ICU of a local hospital in a medically-induced coma.
