"At this point we would consider him armed and dangerous," Pend Oreille County Sheriff's detective Jon Carman said Monday morning.
A Juanita Lane neighbor describes Matthew Swancara as a troubled young man who was trying to turn things around.
"He had a reputation of doing some bad things. Not necessarily violent but, but he changed. He actually, we thought, became a nicer person," the neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
Sally Swancara was a school bus driver for Riverside School District and appeared to be on the verge of starting a new career.
"Sally went away for a while to truck driving school and came back maybe two weeks ago," the neighbor said.
The Washington State Patrol crime lab was called to process the scene hoping to find what sparked the confrontation. Then detectives caught a break when Kalispell Police arrested Matthew Swancara Monday afternoon in Montana.
There is no word yet on when he will be extradited back to Washington.
