SPOKANE, Wash. - One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a car jumped the sidewalk this morning outside of the Hillyard Safeway on North Market Street this morning. The driver of the vehicle is in custody.
Twenty-four year old Spokane resident, Brittney Moen has been arrested and charged with one count of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault.
Spokane Police say around 7:30 a.m. Moen was driving at a high rate of speed through the Safeway parking lot. The three individuals she struck were either sitting or sleeping on the North side of the building, right next to a Subway restaurant when they were hit.
An off duty firefighter was inside the supermarket and rendered aid until police and firefighters arrived.
While the names and ages of the victims are unknown at this time, police can confirm one male has died, one male is in the hospital with serious injuries and a female is being treated for injuries.
Spokane Police Officer Ben Maplethorpe said “Unfortunately the vehicle struck all three individuals. It also struck the building twice. It was then able to continue for a short distance and then the vehicle stopped. It was actually damaged to the point where it could not continue.”
The Subway restaurant was getting ready to open when the accident happened. Inside near where the car hit, chairs were turned over. A note on the outside of the door said they would be closed for the day.
Spokane Police could not confirm if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. They said Moen was cooperative at the scene.
