Cheney Police investigating rape of teen

CHENEY, Wash. - Cheney Police officers are investigating the rape of a 17-year-old girl at an apartment complex that houses college students.

It happened at the Grove Apartments, on Cheney-Spangle Road, the same complex where an Eastern Washington University star athlete was severely beaten a few weeks ago.

The Cheney Police Department said the teen came to a party at an apartment in the complex and was apparently sexually assaulted while she was unconscious after drinking around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the girl drank alcohol at the party and passed out in a bedroom. When someone came in later to check on her, they found someone sexually assaulting the unconscious teen.

The police department is investigating, and hasn't arrested anyone.

EWU sophomore Katie Ashton lives at the apartment complex. She said she hadn't heard about this incident, but said stories like this seem all too common.

"I hope I see a decrease within the next couple years or so, because it's very sad and it's nothing anyone ever really wants to go through," said Ashton.

The victim was not a student at EWU and we do not know if the suspect is a student, either.

EWU did not want to comment Wednesday, as the investigation is still underway. Last week, we asked EWU about a spike in sexual assault cases on campus. School officials said they encourage their students to report incidents of sexual assault, and learning about sexual assault is required for all incoming students at the school.
