Chattaroy woman found safe in neighbor's yard

CHATTAROY, Wash. - A Chattaroy woman who was the subject of a search most of the morning and early afternoon Friday has been located and is safe.

Kathryn Burger, 53, was last seen at 10 p.m. Thursday and reported missing at 8 a.m. Friday. Deputies on the ground, supported by Air 1, began a search of the area in the vicinity of her home on Bear Lake Rd.

Just before 3 p.m. it was reported that she was found laying down in a neighbor's backyard and is safe. She's being taken to the hospital for observation as a precaution.

"I'm relieved it didn't have ot go on longer than it had to," Kyle Phillips said.

Phillips was one of many keeping an eye out for Burger while search crews scoured her neighborhood looking for her.

Authorities were especially concerned for her welfare because she had brain surgery 11 months ago and suffers from seizures, short term memory loss, wears glasses -- which were left at home -- and she's blind in one eye.

One neighbor said that Burger came over to their house and mistook it for her house.

A grid search, aerial surveillance by Air 1, K-9 units were all involved the search.

And then Phillips decided to check his backyard.

"On my way back I saw her laying down on the ground with her knee up," Phillips said.

He ran over to deputies -- stationed just a few houses away -- bringing a wave of relief with him as the search came to a happy conclusion.

"I am relieved. I was a little scared at first. I'm just glad we found her," Phillips said.

Burger was taken to the hospital for a checkup.
