Armed man steals SUV from Spokane County home

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - Burglar steals SUV

A man with a rifle walked into a Spokane County home claiming he was being chased, then grabbed some car keys off a table and made a run for it.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning on S. Carstens Rd. in west Spokane County.

Neighbors on the block say they believe the man was living in the woods nearby.

Settling down for the evening Jeane Bancel and her husband expected another quiet night in west Spokane County when a stranger walked in their front door.
"I said what's going on and he said, 'Call the cops. Call 9-1-1. Somebody is chasing after me and shooting at me,'" said Bancel.

It was 2 a.m. and the dogs were already asleep on the bed, the man kept walking down the hallway.

"Well he had a rifle holding it by the barrel in this hand," said Bancel.

Caught by surprise and in the process of getting in bed Bancel slowly reached for the phone.

"He was definitely on drugs, he wasn't drunk, he was high. He was ramblin'," said Bancel.

That's when the man noticed the dogs in the room.

"But he saw the dog and that's when he turned, ran out and the keys were sitting right on the counter, he didn't take anything else," said Bancel.

He made off with the Bancel's 2005 gold Trail Blazer but left something behind.

"I looked down and it was sitting right there. At least an 18" machete, it was that long," said Bancel.

S. Carstens Rd. is remote by all accounts and also a dead end, neighbors usually only see each other.

"Never seen this man before, never been around, no, nobody locks their doors," said Bancel.

The intruder is described as a young white man 5'10" and about 135 lbs. last seen wearing jeans and a plaid jacket.

Sheriff's deputies say the man should be considered dangerous and anyone with info should call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-STOP.

"We're praising the Lord that nobody got hurt, he didn't even run over a cat, thank God," said Bancel.
