SPOKANE - Spokane Police say a drunk driver ran a red light at Sharp and Division Friday morning and smashed into a police cruiser, injuring the three officers.
The crash happened just after 7:30 a.m.
Officers at the scene say the driver of a red SUV, 37-year-old Tonia Vansant, ran a red light and crashed into a tan police cruiser that was heading east on Sharp.Officers at the scene determined she had been drinking.
The collision was forceful enough to spin the cruiser 180 degrees and through the intersection. It stopped right before hitting the National Furniture Store on the corner.
After the crash Vansant was arrested and will be charged with three counts of Vehicular Assault. Family members contacted after the crash said that Vansant is not an alcoholic and that she doesn't even drink. Then they said she might have had one drink Friday morning.
The three officers were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. One detective was treated and released while the other officers remain in the hospital.
The police department declined to identify the officers involved in the crash citing the need to "allow our SPD Family to support the injured officers and provide investigators the opportunity to investigate the collision thoroughly."
Division Street from Mission to Cataldo was closed for several hours for the crash investigation.
