Spokane County home catches fire twice in two days
A North Spokane County family learned Monday morning that their home had caught fire for the second time, furthering the already devastating damage.
The house in the 21000 block of North Panorama Road first caught fire Sunday morning. Chad and Kayla Stewart and their eight children, including four adopted from Africa, returned from church and watched as their home burned.
Crews used thermal cameras to look for hot spots once the fire was out, but around 6 a.m. Monday morning the fire reignited. Firefighters say they thought they had put the fire out Sunday but a secret hot spot re-ignited.
?Fire can hide ? even with technology we went through the whole building with the thermal imaging camera and still wasn't able to find this hot spot evidently,? Pat Humphries with Fire District 4 said.
The first fire heavily damaged the inside of the home and the second fire destroyed the roof.
The family told investigators that they had been experiencing electrical problems recently. They are looking into that as a possible cause for the first fire.
?We're looking at the electrical box. Owners had some electrical issues going on and we think it might be electrical but we're still investigating to rule out everything else but we're sure it's not suspicious,? Humphries said.
The Stewart family has insurance and their church, Northview Bible Church, is collecting donations on their behalf. The Red Cross is helping the family with temporary housing.
