Spangle couple lose thousands to flooded home
The melting snow, ice, and rain have flooded streets and fields this week. In Spangle, one house in particular seems to have received the worst of it.
"This is kind of the lowest area in town right here," the home's renter, Will Christianson, said.
Will and Audra Christianson woke up Monday ready to start their week.
"There was that musty kind of smell like a wet cigarette and after awhile I decided to get up and put my foot into soggy carpet," Audra Christianson recalled.
Crews continued pressure washing the floor where the water flooded and drying the home out with 28 fans Wednesday. Will says they had a couple thousand dollars in damages, but it could have been worse if the flooding was just an inch higher.
He's also been thanking his wife.
"I've always given my wife a hard time about putting stuff in totes, because she always buys them to put stuff in," Will said. "It drives me nuts spending money on totes but it's paid off a lot because a lot of our important stuff was saved in totes."
The owners of the home are missionaries in France right now, and while their flood insurance will cover the damage to the house the Christiansons renters insurance won't cover anything.
"If we were the homeowners, we'd have a place to stay because insurance would pay for that while we're out," Will said.
The home has flooded three times in the past five years. Will says he couldn't buy renter's flooding insurance when they moved in a year and a half ago, but now they'll try and buy a separate policy. He worries the home's flooding history may have prevented that. The Christiansons are happy the damage wasn't any worse.
"What we've found through all this is God can get you through anything," Will added.
The Christiansons hope to be back in this home within the next month.
