PULLMAN, Wash. -

Cougar fans have been through their share of coaching changes over the years, several, in fact, in the last decade alone, and the latest decision to drop another football coach brought both anger and joy from the fan base.

Coach Mike Price led the Cougs from 1989 to 2002, followed by Bill Doba, who led the team from 2003 until his retirement in 2007. And then Paul Wulff was hired from Eastern Washington University, his tenure lasting just four seasons.

Some fans, upon hearing the news of Wulff's firing Tuesday morning, were so upset they blurted out their displeasure while others were jumping for joy. However all of them were anxious to see how the post-Wulff era of Cougar football will play out.

At the Cougar Country Drive-in, patrons were taking their burgers and fries - along with the news of Paul Wulff's firing - with a grain of salt.

Jim Heimbigner grew up as with Cougar jerseys on his back and was among those disappointed to see Paul Wulff fired.

"What I really liked about Paul Wulff is that he's a Coug and he was in the program and he truly wants what's best for WSU and the Cougars as a whole," Heimbigner said.

Zach Holden also liked the turnaround Paul Wulff was beginning in the football program.

"I think we would have done better next year, we are going to do better next year but I think he should have got a shot to stay here," Holden said.

But the improvements just weren't enough for Cougar fan Mike Bohm, or the WSU athletic department for that matter.

"It's better than how it used to be when Oregon State would come to town and beat us by 50 points, which is certainly nice, but we're still not nearly as good as the rest of the PAC-12 are," Bohm said.

As for Jim Heimbigner, he's an undefeated fan hoping for a bright future for the crimson and gray.

"I'm glad it's finally over and that we're going to be moving forward and I know next year the Cougs are going to be better," he said.
