If you are craving farm fresh produce, meats and cheeses you're in luck. Spokane's first year-round public market opened Thursday at the corner of 2nd and Browne in downtown Spokane.
There's something for everyone at the public market: Flowers from local fields, sausages from cattle raised a few miles outside town, fresh fist from the coast. The market has been in the works for four years and finally on Thursday 40 vendors opened up their shops for business.
It's a long time coming for Jane Keolker, who signed up to sell her gluten free goodies and goat meat from Quail Ridge Ranch at the market more than two years ago.
"It's like a farmers market only more upscale than that. The goal is that its going to be something like a Pike Place Market," she said.
A few booths down Marty Wuollett is peddling pasties.
"It's kind of an all inclusive meal in a pocket," Wuollett said. "It's ground beef, potatoes, carrots and onions all wrapped in a pie dough shell."
There's even Debbie Kasuga who's selling homemade magnets at her store, Grandma Bearing Gifts.
"The big one is my big bum magnets ? [Y]ou can put a note that says get your butt out of my refrigerator," she explained with a laugh.
Everything at the public market comes from around the area.
"If we're trying to get it from everywhere else then your own neighbors are starving, it's just a way to help out the people," Marty Wuollett said.
"You get local food so you help us and we help you because its better for you," Jane Keolker added.
While it's open for business there's still plenty of work left to be done. There's still about $400,000 worth of work to be done before the market is completed.
The market is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For now you need to bring cash only as none of the vendors are accepting credit or debit cards yet.
